Choosing the Right Paint Finish

Color gets most of the attention, but the finish you choose can make just as much of a difference.

The right sheen affects how your paint looks, how well it holds up, and how easy it is to maintain.

The good news? You don't need to memorize every option. Here's what we typically recommend.

Interior Walls

Our Recommendation: Matte or Satin

Matte has become one of our favorite finishes for interior walls. Modern matte paints offer excellent durability while helping hide minor imperfections for a soft, elegant look.

Satin provides a bit more sheen and is easier to wipe clean, making it a great option for busy households.

Best For:

  • Living rooms

  • Bedrooms

  • Hallways

  • Dining rooms

Our Advice:
Choose matte if you want a rich, sophisticated finish that minimizes imperfections. Choose satin if durability and easy cleaning are higher priorities.

Ceilings

Our Recommendation: Flat

Flat finishes help hide imperfections and reduce glare by absorbing light rather than reflecting it.

Best For:

  • Bedrooms

  • Living rooms

  • Dining rooms

  • Most standard ceilings

Trim, Doors & Cabinets

Our Recommendation: Semi-Gloss

Semi-gloss offers the durability needed for high-touch surfaces while creating a clean contrast against walls.

It's easier to wipe down and stands up well to everyday use.

Best For:

  • Baseboards

  • Crown molding

  • Doors

  • Window trim

  • Cabinets

Kitchens, Bathrooms & High-Traffic Areas

Our Recommendation: Satin

These spaces see more moisture, fingerprints, and everyday wear.

Satin provides a balance of durability, washability, and appearance without looking overly shiny.

Best For:

  • Kitchens

  • Bathrooms

  • Laundry rooms

  • Kids' rooms

Exterior Surfaces

Siding & Stucco

We typically recommend a Low Sheen or Satin finish that offers protection without excessive shine.

Trim & Doors

Semi-Gloss provides added durability while helping architectural details stand out.

Decks & Fences

Rather than traditional paint finishes, we recommend premium penetrating stain systems designed to age naturally and simplify future maintenance.

A Simple Rule of Thumb

Higher sheens tend to be more durable and easier to clean, but they can highlight surface imperfections.

Lower sheens are more forgiving and provide a softer appearance.

For most homeowners, the sweet spot is:

  • Matte walls

  • Flat ceilings

  • Semi-gloss trim

  • Satin in high-moisture or high-traffic areas

Our Advice

Don't overthink it.

The best finish isn't the one with the most shine—it's the one that fits the way you live.

We'll help guide you toward finishes that balance appearance, durability, and long-term performance so your home not only looks beautiful, but functions well for years to come.
